Art in a Field: The Franconia Sculpture Park

14 September 2015

As one sculpture title best put it — “I dunno, I’m here”.

About an hour north of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, where two highways meet, if you look through the bushes on the side of the road, you can see 5 deer stacked on top of each other… and a giant house painted like a dog… and about 100 other amazing (and occasionally bizarre) sculptures.

This is the Franconia Sculpture Garden.

A 40 acre park, surrounded by corn fields, is an internationally-known sculpture garden that anyone, anytime the sun is up, and wander through and enjoy for free. And trust me, there is everything. In the two hours it took us to wander through, we saw everything from 50 foot towers cast from concrete, to a fully functioning cabin in the woods, to beautiful fish carved out of wood swimming in a field.

Next time you find yourself in Franconia, Minnesota (population 1,128)… or within 100 miles of there. Detour. Stop. And enjoy.
